Taking IELTS in Nepal: A Practical Guide.
Everything I wish someone had told me before booking the test at British Council Kathmandu.
I sat the IELTS Academic in Kathmandu in early 2024, a few months before applying to graduate programs in the US. Most guides online are written for test-takers in the UK or Australia. This one is for Nepal.
What you need on test day
- Original passport (no exceptions)
- Booking confirmation printout
- Arrive 30 minutes early — British Council security is strict
- No smart watches, no phone in pocket
Study resources that worked

- IELTS Liz for Reading strategies
- Record yourself speaking — painful but necessary
The listening test is the most predictable — accent variety and map completion questions appear every time. Reading is where most Nepali test-takers lose marks: time management, not comprehension, is the actual problem.
Scores that matter for US grad programs
- Most programs want overall 6.5 or 7.0
- Some STEM programs accept 6.0 with strong other materials
- NC State: 6.5 minimum, 7.0 preferred for assistantships
- Individual band minimums vary — check each department
I scored 7.5 overall. The speaking band is the hardest to improve quickly — if you have three weeks, focus on writing Task 2. If you have three months, fix speaking first.
